In 1979 keert het Monty Python Comedy team terug uit Tunesië na de opnames van de film Monty Python's Life of Brian. Na de première in Amerika wordt de film aan de schandpaal genageld door ultra-rechtse religieuze groepen. In Engeland vindt een lid van de kerk van St. Sophia een kopie van het script in een vuilnisbak waarna de film in veel plaatsen verboden wordt. Doodsbedreigingen volgen aan het adres van Michael Palin, één van de acteurs. Uiteindelijk nodigt de krankzinnige tv-presentator Alan Dick Michael Palin en John Cleese uit in zijn late night show om de film te verdedigen tegenover de bisschop van Southwark en de religieuze commentator Malcolm Muggeridge.
